Susy and Bent Olsen have sweetened life in Solvang for nearly 40 years

The Danes who founded Solvang in 1910 reshaped the landscape with their architecture and social institutions. While their windmills and quaint shops continue to draw visitors and serve residents nearly a century later, it’s not only the cityscape that commands passionate allegiance, but the town’s pastries, those irresistible confections that perfume the air with cinnamon, [...]

The Santa Ynez Mountain Range

In his epic book The Mountains, author Stewart Edward White wrote of a crest on the Santa Ynez mountain range, “The ridge, ascending from seaward in a gradual coquetry of foot-hills ... inland dropped off almost sheer to the river below. It left you breathless, wonder-stricken, awed.” — A panoramic photo shot from a ridge in Los Olivos shows approximately 25 miles of the 70-mile-long, mostly single-crested Santa Ynez mountain range, primarily the section of the range we see in the Valley. The San Marcos Pass area is on the far left and Gaviota Pass on the far right.

When Gaspar de Portola led the first Spanish land expedition north from San Diego in 1769 and reached the sheer mountain range near Santa Barbara, he opted to follow the coastline around Point Conception, rather than brave travel over the steep mountain range. The Santa Ynez mountain range is a striking geological landmark as seen [...]

These beauties germinate & blossom from late-December beginning at Birbent Creek into mid-March as far as a quarter-mile up the mountain. Typically, Milkmaids prefer cool shaded areas under oak trees; however, they can be easily viewed along the side [...]

Editors praise her stylish layouts, and new brides treasure her subtle presence as she documents their nuptials. “My specialty is capturing personalities,” Mitchell says, “grabbing those in-between moments that evoke an emotion and not just a memory. I move around a [...]

Horse Training in her DNA

The oddest things can upset a horse, as those familiar with horses know. These photos illustrate Amber handling this common trailriding problem in minutes, using appropriate training skills. 1. No way, you’re not getting me near it! 2. Well, maybe it’s not so bad. 3. What was all the fuss about?
