ONE

In keeping with their philosophy of recycling whenever possible, sisters Maria Bellefeuille, left, and Jessica Yacoub furnished their new consignment store with pre-owned displays, counters, clothes-hangers, mannequins, racks and computers.

Last April, when sisters Jessica Yacoub and Maria Bellefeuille opened ONE Consignment Store in Buellton, they embraced the adage “do what you love.” Since then, the shop has signed up 300 consigners and received an equal number of fresh inventory items just about every day. “I love shopping consignment,” says Yacoub, a Santa Barbara native, [...]

Reading Meters by Stealth

scenicThumb

Endless driving, parking and peering at tiny numbers make reading utility meters a repetitious task. Add fumes from an idling engine and the back-wrenching calisthenics of climbing in and out of a truck, and the task can take its toll on workers’ health.                     Every month, Bill Albrecht, Director of Public [...]

Life at Atterdag

A post card from the 1960s shows Atterdag College, built in 1914, directly behind the Solvang Lutheran Home, built in 1953. Both shared a hill overlooking Solvang at the north end of Atterdag Road. The college was torn down in 1970 to make way for an expanded Solvang Lutheran Home.

Norman Skau lived at Atterdag College as a child and is now the food service director at Atterdag Village. Students lived on campus, where educators from around the world taught everything from literature to folk dancing. The college quickly flowered as [...]

The Grey Fox

Though the reddish tinge in a grey fox coat resembles the local red fox, it’s easy to tell them apart because the tip of a grey fox tail is always darkened while the tip of a red fox tail is always white.
