Santa Ynez Valley got a taste of something different when Patti Wicks opened Pattibakes in Buellton. "I always liked to cook and bake," says Patti, who moved with her husband to Santa Ynez from Santa Barbara 13 years ago. Her son Josh worked at the Roasted Bean, and she'd volunteer to make "little bits of baked goods for (owners) Matt and Vicky when they first opened up."
The demand for her cakes and pastries grew and soon Patti and her crew had more calls for her treats than her home kitchen could turn out.
So she found an industrial kitchen and set up shop.
Eat-in diners can sit at round, wooden tables refinished by Lynn Wicks, Patti's husband, who runs one of the leading art restoration companies in the country. Customers can read a newspaper, magazine or paperback book, or they can do a little shopping; there are shelves of patterned china, greeting cards, dish towels and napkins&emdash;all country-floral themed, and a collection of birthday party accessories for sale.
Pattibakes is famous for its cakes. Chocolate and carrot cupcakes are big sellers, and Awesome Apple Walnut, Lively Lemon, and Razzle Dazzle Raspberry are often requested for birthdays and special occasions. Chocolate and carrot cupcakes are sold at restaurants, including Panino, Los Olivos Country Store and Cafe Quackenbush.
Breakfast breads&emdash;scones, iced cinnamon rolls and muffins, are such a big hit that Patti decided to start serving breakfasts, too. Her menu is still evolving, but she plans to include a breakfast sandwich, "and some interesting egg dishes, possibly poached eggs."
You won't find any processed meat in between the slices of Patti's homemade bread (whole wheat, sourdough, tomato, and Italian bread get raves from Pattibakes diners). And she roasts her own chicken, pork tenderloin, and turkey for sandwiches (the pork tenderloin with chipolte sauce is a must-try, with its unique, savory blend of flavors).
The Harvest Salad, with pears, cranberries, pecans and blue cheese, is always in demand, as is the Southwest Salad, with corn, black beans, green onion and tomatoes. And Cobb and Caesar salads also get high ratings. Soups, more popular in the cooler months, tickle the tastebuds with flavors like Potato Leek, Cream of Asparagus, Corn Chowder, and Spicy Chicken.
Pizzas are new on the menu, and already famous for their fresh, homemade crust. The toppings will change, Patti notes, but right now they're sold hot out of the oven, or refrigerated, to take home for dinner.
Even when you're not hungry, Pattibanks is known for its coffee&emdash;local grind, from El Rancho&emdash;and the coffee drinks that Patti whips up. And if you're not in the mood for a latte float or a blended mocha, you can chose from a wide tea selection from Republic of Tea, including Wildberry Plum and Ginger Peach.
When Patti isn't stirring up a bowlful of batter, or taking a turkey roaster out of the oven, she helps out her husband Lynn, and son Chris, with Bradywicks &emdash;Lynn's business. Most of his clients come from Los Angeles&emdash;like Steven Spielberg, David Geffen and Sotheby's auction house. Collectors, whose houses are filled with expensive works of art, hire Bradywicks to come in and insure that the pieces are kept in tip top shape.
When the Wicks lived in Santa Barbara, her husband had a conservator's studio and employed a staff of ten. Now, he works out of a smaller office in the Valley, and his wife helps with the business end of things. "He enjoys helping me too," she points out. Especially when she's making his favorite cake, and his job is to taste it.
