Solvang's beloved Danish heritage museum, the Elverhoj Museum of History & Art, celebrates 15 years of service with a special open house at the museum on Sunday, October 12, from 4-6pm, and the public is welcome.
The museum, one of the few dedicated to Danish heritage within the United States, also has archival collections of Solvang history. The museum is located in former residence of Viggo and Martha Brandt-Erichsen, a charming structure built in traditional Scandinavian architecture to resemble an 18th century Danish farmhouse. The Brandt-Erichsens' were artists, who delighted in opening their home for many cultural events.
The sculpture shown at LEFT by Viggo Brandt-Erichsen greets visitors to the Elverhoj.
The building became the property of Solvang, bequeathed by Mrs. Brandt-Erichsen prior to her passing, and, after an extensive retrofit, opened as the Elverhoj Museum in 1988. Since then, volunteers have welcomed some 90,000 visitors from all over the world. The former art studio now serves as a venue for changing art exhibition, in addition to the historical exhibits. The Solvang diorama, housed in a garden cottage, shows vintage Solvang, circa 1911-1932. The small scale buildings are all hand-crafted by Johannes Jaeger and Edward Hansen. An audio system was recently installed, narrated by Kurt Hoj, with an entertaining description of the village. |
